ABSTRACT
This study is entitled: Students’ Translation in Translating Abstracts
This study is aimed at analyzing five students’ abstracts in translating the Indonesian version into English. This study used qualitative approach. The data for the study were collected through document analysis. Each document was analyzed based on grammar classifications, grammatical mistakes, and translation methods used. They then were tabulated. Grammar classifications and grammatical mistakes were analyzed based on Azar (1998), Baron (2000), and Murcia (1989), and theories of translation method were from Newmark (1988).
This study found that most of the students make mistakes in subject-verb agreement and subject. Meanwhile, the method used by most of them is literal translation. Moreover, their target translation is fully influenced by their source language structure pattern.
Based on the findings as aforementioned, it is concluded that grammatical mistakes may be caused by lack understanding and skills of English grammar, and lack of training and practices.
